Pennant Corner

Across the river we ventured out to the rolling hills of Heidelburg Golf Club. The course was presented in magnificent condition with well-defined and lush fairways along with fast and true poa greens, which were very slick if your approach shot ventured above the hole. We faced a formidable opponent in Rosanna, and whilst we fought hard on the back 9 to stay in touch, we came up short 7.5 to 1.5. The result suggests a wipeout, but this was far from the case with most players leading into the back 9, but alas the Rosanna team was just too strong. Results were as follows:

  1. John Vidovic lost 5&4
  2. Bryan Harper lost 2 down
  3. Rob Mallard lost 3&1
  4. Graeme Harris lost 7&6
  5. George Zhang lost 3&2
  6. Rodney Andersen lost 4&3
  7. Brett Ryan all square
  8. Travis Cox lost 3&1
  9. Pd & Cam MacSween won 1 up

It was a tough loss out there as Rosanna has always been our benchmark for the past few years, but match play always throws up some surprises. I am sure we learned a lot about our game and what we need to focus on in practice. We are disappointed with the result but definitely taking some positives away from the experience. Highlights for the day were Robbie Mallard playing his 50th game of senior pennant – Robbie has a 50% plus strike rate playing at the pointy end each week and we all love his commitment to improving his game. Brett Ryan dug deep to halve his match with a clutch 10-footer on the 18th. This was Brett’s first squared match in YCSP – he has only lost 4 times in his 21-game career! And the 4Ball team of Cam and yours truly found ourselves in a real dog fight against 2 quality opponents who hit some great shots down the stretch to stay in the contest. But with the aid of my brother (a Burg member) we were able to navigate the greens better and roll in some epic putts to deliver a much-needed win for the team.
We venture out to The Heritage next Friday to play a much-improved Gardiners Run. The team for our R4 clash is as follows:

  1. John Vidovic
  2. George Zhang
  3. Bryan Harper
  4. Rob Mallard
  5. Graeme Harris
  6. Rodney Andersen
  7. Travis Cox
  8. Gary Seymour
  9. Steve Pryor & Cam MacSween

Should you consider coming out to The Heritage, we are playing on the magnificent Henley Course which is a 10–15-minute walk from the club house. The Henley rises alongside the Warrandyte State
Forest. The rough is as picturesque as the fairways are wide and the rugged terrain is much more in keeping with the traditional Scottish or Irish links courses. The Henley has the traditional ‘nine holes out and nine holes in.’ This course boasts the longest par 4 in Australia and will test the most talented players in our team. Ernie and I look forward to seeing you out there.

Regards

Capt Pd

Footnote – Congratulations to and a big shout out to our very own George Zhang for his maiden victory in the Veterans Club Championship and his first gold letters. Not sure if George sees himself as a veteran but more a “legend”. We do need to address our terminology sooner rather than later I believe.
