Another trek out into the Yarra Valley saw us at Gardiners Run playing against our friendly neighbours from Latrobe. Gardiners Run is a marvellous & scenic Yarra Course and with a new superintendent in the shed it has improved beyond sight and provides a stern test of golf with lush fairways & quality greens. We found ourselves in a tight tussle against Latrobe and Manager Ernie was not too confident we would get over the line if the rub of the green did not turn our way.
We needed to dig deep and not one, but five contests came down the 18th needing to win the hole and five out of five made pars on the difficult 18th with four of those winning the hole and securing the contest that gave us a 5/4 victory against the odds. Results for the day can be seen below.
Without the heroics on the last hole this result would have been a victory to Latrobe, but we are a proud squad with a fair amount of experience, and it was that calmness under pressure that held sway for a great victory. It was great to see Mike Wood have a win, and I am sure he will be better for the run. Rob Mallard, Graeme Harris and Dave Simpson all stood on 18 one up and knowing they could not afford to lose the hole, they all delivered shots under pressure off the tee that resulted in 2 up victories. Bryan Harper as usual did not make it to 18 as he is in stellar form and would be leading our best & fairest this year if we had one. The 4 ball lads either led or were tied all day with some great golf being played and birdies only getting halves. Alas a birdie on 16th saw them drop to one down and pars on 17 & 18 could not square the contest.
We sit equal 2nd on the ladder but with the bye in play next week we may drop down a few rungs if results do not go our way. Rosanna is clearly the team to beat this year with The Heritage, Kew, Heidelberg and Green Acres all fighting for second place and a finals berth. Hopefully over the next few weeks we can field our strongest team and give ourselves a shot at the pennant.
YCSP will be held at Green Acres this Friday with the following contests taking place:
· Eastern V Gardiners Run
· Yering Meadows V The Heritage
· Latrobe V Kew
· Heidelberg V Rosanna
Thanks to all the caddies and supporters who made the long trek out to Gardiners Run. It was great to see so many out there walking the fairways with the team. Our next contest is against archrivals Kew at Eastern on March 14. It’s fair to say that we really want to (and need to) win this one!
See you all around the club and if you want to watch some great golf venture down on Friday to watch the very best of YCSP on our own deck.

See you around the club.

Youth Pennant
Please see the Youths Team Manager report below from Greg O’Brien.
The second round of Youth Pennant kicked off on Sunday March 2nd at Sandhurst Golf Club, playing against Kew.
The opposition had a very strong team, and all 5 results went their way. However, at the turn we were winning in three matches and the results were too close to call. The Green Acres team continue to change the playing mix, to both expose players and allow learning by the entire team through match play.
The individual results can be seen below.
It was also great that 3 players also turned up to caddy for the team.
Practice for the team continues throughout the week and on Saturdays. There is a bye this week for the long weekend, with the next game against Northern on March 16th.
Competition results can be found here.
Men’s Pennant
Please see the Men’s Team Captain report below from Jack Allan.
Round 2 of Men’s Pennant on Sunday saw the boys head out to Sandhurst to take on the top of the ladder team in Rossdale, who were fresh off a 7-0 win last week. Leading the charge for us was Charlie Sartori who got us off us off to a flyer, taking down his opponent 5&4 and getting an important early win for us. Following Charlie out was Nick Papaleo, who continued his undefeated career in pennant, winning his match on the 16th hole 3&2. At our number 5 spot was Will Bate, who didn’t have more than a hole difference with his opponent all day, ultimately ending up all square after 18 holes in a well-fought match.
At number 4 was our current club champion Barney Greaves who managed to find his hot form that he has displayed over the last month, and used it to destroy his opponent 8&6, well played Barney! After a great start from the four men out on the course, some struggles came from Nick Shortis, Jack Allan and Ash Hall, who all went down in close matches, ultimately leaving the final score of the day as a 3.5 – 3.5 draw.
The first draw the Men have had in pennant history, as they changed the rules from last year – where any match all square after 18 holes would have resulted in a playoff, meaning there would always be a winning team on the day.
A great effort from the team leaves us sitting tied for second on the ladder after 2 games, with a long weekend break this week followed by us taking on Sandhurst GC at Kooringal the following week. Please see below for all results.
