Senior Pennant

Please see the Senior Teams Captain’s report below from PD Downey.

A classic battle loomed against the new kids on the block in Gardiners Run on the Henley Course at The Heritage Golf Club. And it was the battle-hardened GA outfit that reigned supreme beating Gardiners Run 6 contests to 3. This win keeps us in contention for our fifth finals appearance in as many years, but we do need some results to go our way and of course keep our winning record intact. Results for the day were as follows:

1. John Vidovic lost 1 down

2. George Zhang lost 1 down

3. Bryan Harper won 2&1

4. Rob Mallard won 4&2

5. Graeme Harris won 4&3

6. Rodney Andersen won 6&5

7. Travis Cox lost 4&3

8. Gary Seymour won 2&1

9. Steve Pryor & Cam MacSween won 1 up

Highlights for the day were many. As I was not playing, I got to watch the boys up close and saw some marvellous golf. Gary Seymour was robbed of an ace on his first hole with his ball pitching 6 inches in front of the hole and climbing the pin only to return back to earth and be rejected by the lip. This fired up Gaz and he hit his next 2 shots on the par 3’s to gimme distance. We also saw the return of Graeme Harris to his very best – Graeme is integral to our success as his good golf is very very good and he can beat anyone on his day.

Rodney and Robbie had solid wins as did Bryan Harper. On the worlds longest Par 4 (467 metres downhill) I got to witness both Graeme and Rodney drive the ball to within lob wedge!! And finally, the 4-Ball in Steve Pryor and Cam MacSween. Steve is fondly known as The Vet amongst the squad but after his heroics on 18 (again) we may need to call himThe Finisher”. 2 weeks ago, he eagled the 18th for the win and on Friday he pulled off a magnificent up and down on 18 for par to also win the contest with Cam. This was a great team win as we were down 6-3 for much of the day but we turned it around when it counted.

The team for next Friday is as follows:

1. John Vidovic

2. George Zhang

3. Bryan Harper

4. Rob Mallard

5. Graeme Harris

6. David Simpson

7. Gary Seymour

8. Mike Wood

9. Steve Pryor

10. Paul Downey

Emergency – Cam MacSween

We see the return of David Simpson to our team. Simmo is a competitive beast who will no doubt want to make a statement when he returns. Mike Wood also returns and will add some depth to ourmidfield”. Cam has a rest this week whilst Rodney, Brett and Travis are all unavailable. We still have a few secret weapons to play this year, and we are looking forward to welcoming them to the team.

Big shout out to Brian Chappel, David Simpson, Chris Bate and of course Ernie Mensforth for their assistance on the day. Watching Ernie try and herd our team from the clubhouse (bar) to the 8th hole on The Henley was a site to behold. We play our neighbours Latrobe this week at Gardiners Run at 11.15AM. Roadworks are currently in progress on Victoria Rd, however access to Gardiners Run is permitted if travelling northbound on Victoria Rd (i.e If travelling north from Maroondah Hwy).

See you around the club.

Youth Pennant

Please see the Youths Team Manager report below from Greg O’Brien.

The first round of Youth Pennant kicked off on Sunday 23rd Feb at Northern Golf Course, playing against Rossdale.

Both Rossdale and Green acres came up from Division 4 last year, where they finished 1st and 2nd. Our team is made up of a mix of players from last year with new faces coming-up from the Junior pennant teams, creating a blend of experience and potential.  Well done to the (current) junior players, competing against older players in Match play and off the stick.

Many of the team only met each other for the first time last week, when they practiced together.  It was therefore great that 3 players turned up to caddy for the teamforegoing their own games.  Well done Ollie Cruickshank, Mason O’Brien & Ned Rath.

Toby Cook is the captain, bringing leadership and experience to the team.  While he went done 3 and 2, it took a monster chip that was holed out from 35m to beat him.

Joel Dichiera had a solid win. Sam Reid birdied the 2nd last hole to square the match – which remained the final result.

Paddy Rath and Will Macisaac went down, for a 1 ½ to 3 ½ loss.

We are lucky that this season, all youth pennant games are at the same locations as the men’s pennant, providing a great opportunity for the players in both teams to see each other play. Some in the men’s team came out on course to see and support the youth team.  After the youth team finished, some went out to caddy for the men’s team, while the others stayed to both practice and watch the men’s team return to the clubhouse on their way through to the back nine.

Competition results can be found here.

Men’s Pennant

On Sunday, the men’s pennant team played the first round in our new division against Kew, hosted by Northern Gc. In what was a grand final rematch from the previous season, the boys got off to a flying start, with Nick Shortis and new recruit Will Bate both making the turn at 5 up and Nick Papaleo turning 4 up, things were looking good early on for Greenacres. In windy and fast conditions, the boys managed to get 4 wins in, getting our season off to a flying start.

The results in order were

1. Jack Allan 3&2 Win

2. Barney Greaves 1Dwn Loss

3. Nick Shortis 6&5 Win

4. Nick Papaleo 2up Win

5. Will Bate 7&5 Win

6. Tom Alan 2&1 Loss

7. Charlie Sartori 1Dwn Loss

A big thanks to all the caddies and supporters who came out to Northern on the weekend. Next week the team plays against Rossdale, hosted at Sandhurst at 12:10 off the 1st tee.

Competition results can be found here.
