The first Men’s Honour Board event of the year began under beautiful summer conditions, with the course in excellent shape. The first round was nearly completed without interruption until a massive thunderstorm rolled in, forcing a temporary suspension of play. Once the weather cleared and play resumed, defending champions Will Bate and Barney Greaves completed the first 18 holes tied for the lead with Paul Thaw and Paul Cruickshank, two shots clear of their nearest competitors.
However, the weather took another turn, with persistent rain rendering some greens unplayable and causing a second disruption. When play finally resumed, the second round was completed, although ominous radar images continued to threaten further delays. After 36 holes, a dramatic three-way tie emerged at a gross score of 151. The tied teams—Paul Cruickshank/Paul Thaw, Barney Greaves/Will Bate, and Josh Monk/Jack Allan—prepared for a playoff as the weather improved and the course emptied, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the Foursomes Championship.
On the first playoff hole, the players found themselves in very different positions after their tee shots: one was short, one was left, and one landed in the left fairway bunker. Despite strong efforts, Paul Cruickshank and Paul Thaw were unable to save par after missing the green with their fairway bunker shot, ending their playoff run.
The second playoff hole, the par-4 2nd, began with Josh launching a driver over the right-hand tree line with a slight draw, leaving him perfectly positioned on the left portion of the fairway. Unfortunately, Barney’s drive faded too much, leaving Will in the trees for his next shot. Will managed to make solid contact, but the ball flew over the left greenside bunker, leaving Barney in a challenging position. Meanwhile, Jack stepped up with a wedge and struck a brilliant approach shot to within 10 feet of the flag, putting immense pressure on Barney and Will.
Josh’s birdie attempt was online but came up just short. However, their par was enough to seal the win, marking Jack Allan and Josh Monk’s third Men’s Foursomes Championship victory.
